Today we conclude are series on the fruits of the spirit. We will end with what many will say is the hardest of all the fruits of the spirit, self control. Self control is the virtue of one who has masters hid or her desires and passions. What a difference it would make in our lives and those around with could all practice a little self control. I want to look into four passages today and see what we can learn about this very important fruit.
Without self control people lose their way.
- Proverbs 5:21-23 (Contemporary English Version)
- The LORD sees everything, and he watches us closely. Sinners are trapped and caught by their own evil deeds. They get lost and die because of their foolishness and lack of self-control.
- Proverbs 25:28
- Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.
With self control people find their way.

- The Law of the Lord is a lamp, and its teachings shine brightly. Correction and self-control will lead you through life.
- 1 Corinthians 9:25 (New Living Translation)
- All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.
Practical tips for self control
- Think of the value of the things you do
- Set some goals
- No excuses
- Think of the end result not how hard it is.
