COME THOU ALMIGHTY KING
Many of us have that thought in our minds these days. The first time I sang this song was in grade school. Times have changed. This hymn was written by someone, known only by God, written for a good reason.
It appeared anonymously in George Whitefield’s Hymn Book, published in 1757.
Whether the author was trying to remind us that there is an almighty King greater than any earthly ruler, or whether he was simply writing it as a special hymn for Trinity Sunday, it is a grand and noble hymn praising our sovereign Lord.
The King of kings and Lord of lords deserves our ultimate honor and complete allegiance. This familiar Trinity hymn is one of our most popular “opening hymns” for a Sunday morning worship service.
The tune is attributed to Italian Felice de Giardini, 1716 – 1796.
Try singing it along with me.
COME, THOU ALMIGHTY KING
Come thou almighty king. Help us Thy name to sing.
Help us to praise: Father! All-glorious, O`er all victorious.
Come, and reign over us, Ancient of Days.
Come, Thou Incarnate Word. Gird on Thy mighty sword.
Our prayer attend!
Come, and Thy people bless, and give Thy word success.
Spirit of holiness, On us descend.
Come, Holy Comforter, Thy sacred witness bear
In this glad hour! Thou, who almighty art, Now rule in every heart, And ne `er from us depart, Spirit of pow`r.
To Thee, great One in Three. Eternal praises be, Hence evermore:Thy sov`reign majesty May we in glory see.
And to eternity Love and adore.
