Romans 3:24-26
and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
- God’s Grace
- Justified -to declare, pronounce, one to be just, righteous.
- Through the work of the Christ
- It not what we do but what He DID
- God’s Wrath
- propitiation,
- To turn away wrath by the offering of a gift.
- Context it means that the death of Christ turns away God’s wrath.
- Leviticus 16 Day of Atonement. It must be the high priest and him alone, and it must happen on the Day of Atonement—and on no other day. On the Day of Atonement the high priest would take off his regular clothes and put on a sacred linen tunic. He would sprinkle the goat blood on the lid of the Ark of the Covenant. That lid—made of beaten gold—was called the “Mercy Seat.” Inside the Ark was a copy of the Ten Commandments—representing the Law of God. By the sprinkling of the blood, the sins of the people were “covered.” That covering by means of blood was called the “atonement.” The sacrifice of blood turned away the wrath of God. Why is this important? Because God’s justice demands death as the ultimate punishment for sin.
- propitiation,
- God’s Justice
- God is Holy
- Sin Must be punished
- God is both just (in punishing sin) and the justifier of those who believe in Jesus.
