Attributes of God
For the last several weeks, Sarah Tegeler has been holding a Bible study at her home for women and we have been discussing the attributes of God. During each meeting, we discuss a different attribute and relate it to our lives, reference scripture, and spend time in prayer. There are so many words that describe our God, I would like to take some time to share them with you.
- Holiness- the quality or state of being Holy
- Holy- exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness
Notice the word “perfect”. No one on this earth can be perfect, but God calls us to a holy life. Through Him we can be holy, but not on our own. - Scripture references: 2 Timothy 1:8-9, Hebrews 10:9-10, Hebrews 10:14, 1 Peter 1:15-16, and 2 Peter 3:11-12a
- Holy- exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness
- Compassionate (compassion)- sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it
Our God is compassionate. He understands and sees our hurt and times of trouble. One discussion question that I think everyone should consider is this: how do I feel compassion for those who do not seem to deserve it? Sometimes we are too close to a situation to and feel some people do not deserve compassion. At these times it is good to look at it objectively and remember we are all God’s children.- Scripture references: Exodus 33:19, Nehemiah 9:19-21 and 26-28, Psalm 103:6-12, Matthew 9:35-38, John 11:32-37, and Luke 23:32-43
- Faithful- steadfast in affection or allegiance, loyal, firm in adherence to promises or in observance of duty
Our God is faithful. He never breaks a promise and is always by our side. We are sometimes not so faithful to God or others- whether intentionally or not. Sarah asked us this question: where do you need to be more faithful to God and/or those he has put in your life?- Scripture references: Galatians 5:22, 1 John 1:9, Psalm 89:1-2, Romans 3:28, and Deut. 7:9
These are only a few of the many attributes of our God. I encourage you to find more in your time with God. And as always, if you would like to lead or host a Bible study, or would like to see a topic discussed, please contact Rachel or Sandy.
