Today we continue to talk about mercy last week we looked at the mercy that the Father has given to all who accept Christ and why we are to be thankful for that act of mercy.  The second have of this beatitude states and they will receive mercy for those who show mercy.  What is meant by this statement?  Are acts of mercy going to save us from the judgment of God?  Is this what Jesus was teaching His disciples?

I think we can take three concepts form this phrase

  1. Jesus said mercy will be shown to those who show mercy, this is a true statement, but doesn’t necessary mean we should show mercy to every person.
    1. Murders,
    2. We must be close to Christ to know when justice and mercy should be shown.
  2. Just because someone is merciful(in the worlds view) doesn’t result in salvation.
    1. Maybe they have a lesser degree in hell
    2. Maybe they have some world blessings
      1. The dead, the great and the small, were standing before the throne…. And the dead were judged…according to their deeds” (Rev. 20:12).
      2. And the servant that knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act in accord with that will, shall receive much punishment. But the one that did not it, and committed deeds worthy of punishment, will receive little punishment. To whom much is given, much will be required” (Luke 12: 47-48).
      3. Not many of should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly” (James 3:1)
  3. Jesus Christ was the most merciful human being who ever lived. He never did anything to harm anyone. He reached out to the sick and healed them. He enabled the crippled to walk, the blind to see, the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. He showed love to tax collectors, prostitutes, debauched people, and drunks. He redeemed them and set them on their feet. Our Lord wept with those who were in sorrow, and made the lonely feel loved. He gathered little children in His arms and loved them. Christ received no mercy from those He gave mercy to. The merciless Roman system decided to kill Him.
  4. The Promise to the merciful
    1. Proverbs 3:3-4 (NKJV) Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart,  And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.
    2. Proverbs 14:21 (NKJV) He who despises his neighbor sins; But he who has mercy on the poor, happy is he.
